Do you ever feel empty? Like turning off a light switch, it sometimes comes suddenly—the feeling is just there. When I feel this way, it’s often because I’m pre-occupied with the problems or the busyness of life; at other times, it’s because I’ve shifted my focus away from God and his purposes for me. Somehow, in the midst of this emotion, we innately desire fullness and adventure in life. God intends these for us. We yearn for them because we’re made for them. Unlike the myth perpetuated by society, or the misbeliefs formed in our own minds, God is not boring—not the creator of the dull and lifeless. Jesus tells us. “The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they might have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10, NIV).
Like David conquering the giant Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1–50) or Elijah defeating five hundred false prophets of Baal, calling down fire from heaven (1 Kings 18), God is available to show his reality and power in our lives. He is willing to provide and protect, and will make his glory known.
The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. (Psalm 145:17–19)
I’ve seen this time and again in my life. Like when he miraculously provided finances to secure my basic needs. Multiple times, envelopes with money or checks have unexpectedly come in the mail from people I didn’t know. In every case, they came when I was needing, praying for, and genuinely relying on God’s provision. Or, when I desperately needed his healing. Once so ill I couldn’t even brush my own teeth, prepare my own food, or dress myself, God rescued me from an unimaginable depth of illness. I’m still fighting toward recovery, but the restoration I’ve seen has been unbelievable. I believed for it, though, because of him.
Though I walk through the valley of the darkest shadow, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You’ve anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. (Psalm 23:4–5)
He wants to give us an “overflowing cup” in life, one so full we can’t contain all the goodness he showers down on us. Whether you need to burst out of the monotony of everyday life, or find rescue from deep waters . . .
