The Word works

Into the Great Unknown

Sometimes life is scary—we often face a barrage of unknowns. What will life bring? Should I risk with this person? Is it wise to make this career move? Relationships, job decisions, and how and where we build our lives can bring a lot of uncertainty.

Thankfully, we have a sure guide. Throughout Scripture, God refers to himself as a rock—someone solid that we can depend on.

Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come. . . . Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one. (Isaiah 44:7–8)

When we let him lead our lives, our path is sure, even if we can’t make sense of our surroundings or where he’s taking us. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5–6).

It’s comforting, knowing that through the ups and downs of life, all will be okay. His intentions toward us are good, and he leads us to places of peace. “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my my mighty fortress, I will not be shaken.” (Psalm 62:5–6)

This requires trust. When you know God is leading you down a given path, follow him. When you know what obedience means in a given situation, obey him. When you know right from wrong given his standards (not society’s), believe him. In every area of life, we can trust that he knows best and will lead us to a good outcome. When we follow Jesus and walk with our hand in his, purpose, fullness of life, peace, and security become realities we experience, not just hope for.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. (Psalm 23:1–3)

Don’t let fear hold you back from all the good things God has for you. Put your feet on his path and walk. It's a better adventure than you could ever imagine.
