God Is Faithful
God is faithful. He’s true to who says he is. He never breaks a promise—either from his Word or his Spirit, spoken directly into ours. Who can we find like him? Who can be for us what he is? NO ONE. In Isaiah 43:11, God reveals his exclusive glory: “I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior” (NIV). There is no one stronger, truer, or more selflessly loving than him. He is simply without comparison: He has no equal.
So who deserves our love, adoration, faithfulness and devotion? Who could but him? Every relationship is but an imperfect glimpse of his perfect love toward us: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isaiah 43:1–3). We need this kind of comfort in life, because the waters, the fire, and the flames will come. And in them, we’ll find him faithful. “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” (See Numbers 23:19.) He is faithful in his holiness to discipline when we need it, and in his love, to see us through the hard times in life.
Why do we not reach out for him more? Why do we think we’re going to find our longings fulfilled in some other source? No human relationship can offer perfect love. Sooner or later, we all disappoint others, because we’re imperfect. That’s why our greatest pursuit in life MUST be God. Only as we come to know him, and grow to be like him, can we begin to give away love that resembles his: selfless, spent for others, always desiring their good . . . he is our ultimate example. And only in this place can we receive perfect love.
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers” (1 John 3:16).
What about career and the realization of our potential? Where else can we find who we’re truly meant to be? Only the one who designed us knows what we’re made for. He made us to fulfill whatever beautiful purpose he created in his, the most beautiful and creative of minds.
In short, all our deepest searchings and longings find fulfillment in God. Love, joy, the freedom of authenticity, inner rest, yes—fullness of life—all are found in him. God will be all that you need him to be—the perfect love.
